Obituary: Prof. Ray Rees (1943-2022)

It is with great sadness that the faculty bid farewell to Ray Rees, who passed away on December 29, 2022 after a short, serious illness.

Ray Rees held the Chair of Insurance Economics from 1993 until his retirement in 2008. Here he taught primarily microeconomics, risk and insurance theory, and history of economic thought. His research in applied microeconomics covered a wide range of topics from household economics, taxation, labor supply, aging, income distribution, insurance, price regulation, collusion, profit sharing, and energy economics. His impressive list of publications includes articles in the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Public Economics, and the Economic Journal. Even in retirement, he continued to publish articles in top-tier journals that have received widespread attention.

But most importantly Ray Rees was a very special person whose intelligence, kindness, and good humor will always be remembered and stay in the hearts of all on the faculty who knew him. Our thoughts are with his wife, Denny, and his sons and their families.
